underdog vs champions

who would you rather support -- an underdog or the obvious champs?
trying to take a break away from rational behavior ..
would prefer a generic argument rather than a specific instance

personally i have always found myself rooting for the champs just because they have a proven track record and provide a better expected return of investment of support -- but given the recent tendencies to break away from rational behavior things have become a little blurred of late

p.s: anyone know how to track ip addresses in blogger?

In a game between a champion and a challenger, I can see only the following reasons to support the champ (in the following priority):
1. You are either a relative/friend of the champion
2. The champion is representing a group/region that you think you belong to
3. You have gone nuts!

In essence, in a game between neutral parties, I don't see why anyone would not root for the underdog. The only thrill in all forms of sport is to see the unexpected happen. If the chances of someone winning is high and that is the individual/team that ends up winning, what's the point in the game being played?

Would be interested to hear your point of view ... I'm sure you have some crazy logic :)

BTW, to track IP addresses, here's one way. I assume you have access to the logs on your department's webserver. Then, in the html of your blog, put in a link to say, a 1x1 image that resides in your department's webspace. What to do thereafter I guess is obvious.

q1: well .. rooting for the champs usually gives better satisfaction at the end of the day and it usually implies supporting better talent, which means you have more better plays to cheer for. there are two reasons to follow sport --
1. enjoy the game (from a pseudo-technical perspective) and
2. feel better at the end of it.
the enjoying the game aspect is often non-existent due to lack of fundas in some games (e.g. football :-) ) and lack of ur own fundaes (e.g: F-1). in such cases, cheering the champs can do you a whole lot of personal good with respect to the feel better factor.

q2: dept webserver -- no, i was wondering if blogger has something inherent, i believe livejournal does
