one problem with ev's comment - isnt accepting randomness/mundaneness the easier solution? if anyrandomthing is possible we dont need complicated theories. i think the idea is just that we want to find a reason we exist and a purpose for our existence beyond mere survival. we need to find a greater cause and purpose and to do that we need to understand stuff. once the basic idea is set, two paths exist - one of intellectual masturbation and the other of drowning in the flood of more and more theories and 'understandings'. and then comes the 2nd part of eV's comment because we r intellectually quite limited we become anxious and try to find simple answers.
