desperately seeking depression

what is it about the human psyche that makes us go search for sad/depressing stuff?

case studies: books, music, movies

the best music (at least in indian films) seems to be those that have a depressed protagonist (preferably drunk beyond redemption).

the best books seem to be ones that are absolutely wrought with depression and thought-provoking stuff.

the best movies seem to be inspired by human tragedy and war.

inspired by current addiction to kabhi na kabhi ..from sharaabi

maybe its just me ...

Dude, its just the opposite. Almost all books and movies have happy endings, so the ones that don't and are reasonably good are celebrated.

...it's to celebrate the existence of cuppers :))

Well, one might claim there's more scope for memorable creativity with unhappiness, if one buys Tolstoy's claim about happy families being all alike etc.

There was also a NYTimes article about middle schoolers being made to read many depressing books, allegedly because "some teachers were under the illusion that real life is depressing". :)
